casestudy - Kew Palace, London

Princesses bedroom

The restoration and representation of Kew Palace was a huge undertaking for Historic Royal Palaces, the charity responsible for Kew Palace. Conservators and curators carefully investigated the archaeology of the building looking for clues as to how the décor would have looked in the early 1800’s. For example, a fragment of wallpaper border that was discovered in one of the Princesses bedrooms helped to determine the wallpaper scheme found throughout the first floor. A team of skilled conservators, artisans and craftspeople were then employed to sensitively restore both the décor and furnishings within these rooms.

In conjunction with contractor Linney Cooper, The Grosvenor Wilton Company was commissioned to advise on the carpet design styles used during George III’s reign and how they would have been fitted and installed. After close consultation with the conservation team at Historic Royal Palaces, loop pile (Brussels) carpet was woven for the four main rooms on the first floor of the palace, exactly as per the handpainted archive design miniatures that had been recommended and yarn was carefully dyed to match the colours on these papers to ensure a faithful reproduction of 19th Century carpet.
